Work is crazy. My boss, Anna, scheduled me for 56 hours last week, 7 days. I’m working around 54 this week and I don’t get a day off till Sunday. Awesome. She’s leaving for Philly for about 3 weeks so I’m pretty sure she’s giving me just enough rope to hang myself or shine. She left me with some projects to work on while she’s gone so I’m going to finish those + make sure I get in some extra credit work or something. The best thing with her is go above and beyond, she wants me to give this everything, like I need to eat sleep shit dream absorb everything tattoo. I want this so bad so I’m doing it. Work bike work bike work bike. I’m becoming consumed at this point, but that’s alright because days are flying by so I don’t notice the time as much which is nice. I’m finally focusing all my energy into something I believe in and I’m going with it. I miss people though. Ahhhhh whatever. I can’t think like that or my chest swells up. You are missed though and I look forward to this summer every day.
Moving into a new place within the next 2 weeks, very excited about that. It’ll be about a 15min ride downhill in the morning and 20min at night uphill. An awesome way to finish and end my day! Also, saddle comes in next week and after that I’m powder coating my bike 3 swanky new colors. It’s going to be a purple, grey, and white fade. Wet dream. I seriously love love love the Kickstand bike shop, it’s ran by this couple (Kim and Sirus), who are teachers at a school for kids with special needs and at night they run the bike shop. They’re super helpful, totally laid back, and they let me work on my bike while guiding me through what I needed to do so I could learn and understand what the fuck I was trying to do. Ahh so awesome!
Things feel good, I feel good, and I’m working hard.
quick note for those of you that don’t know what this “blog” is about:
I am Reeda. I work at a tattoo shop in Oahu, HI called Skin Deep Tattoo. I’m SSSLLLLOOOOWWWWWLLLLYYYY learning to tattoo, but my main focus for the current time being is to constantly continue producing art and getting better at drawing in order to create images that not only I like, but that hopefully one day people will want to have on them permanently. I’m also working on understanding the mechanics of how tattoo machines work, and how to fix them. I will be spending the new few years here in Hawaii learning how to hone in on my craft and trying to strive to be the shit at everything I do everyday. We’ll see how that goes right? I don’t know, I just want one day to have people look at my art and not judge it for what’s between my legs, and more so because it’s good. I’m far off but you gotta think big to go big!
When I’m not in Hawaii, you can find me in the WONDERFUL state of Texas, specifically Austin. That’s where I live the other part of the year and where I consider home to be. So you’ll probably see posts about me pining to go home and about how much I think Texas rules. I’m from California but I don’t think that’s very interesting, I think Texas is way cooler haha.
I ride a single speed SR road bike (‘84 I think, it’s hard finding info on my bike besides that it’s Japanese made) that I am in love with. I enjoy most things bicycle oriented, but especially the people and culture I’ve found through riding. “Ain’t no crew like the one I’m with!!” It’s pretty much been a super deep love affair with my bike since we became united. It’s name is Nimbus 2000 and I ride it like a beast. I use to enjoy cruising around with friends and riding around to the bars downtown, so maybe like 10mi a day a few times a week. My attitude has since changed. Now all I can think about sometimes is how much I want to leave work and go for a ride. I dream about bikes in my sleep, I fantasize about my new saddle and how good it’s going to feel not having a bruised crotch anymore (I’m getting the Vesta!), and I seriously was looking at your bike, not you. I love how I feel after I accomplish a 40mi ride, I love being covered in sweat and dirt, I love the feeling of empowerment I get when I’m on my bike going faster than cars in traffic and just the overall pure pleasure of being on a bicycle. I loveeee it!!!!! I’m also extra stoked that I got to bring my baby with me to Hawaii because I’ve been mapping out routes for our future adventures and I must say it’s looking like I’m going to be having some serious fun in the next few months.
Basically, I like art, bicycles, cycling, and working damn hard. I’m also a HUGE Harry Potter and Star Wars nerd. Those are my main interests so that’s what I enjoy talking about. If you don’t want to read or see pictures of things related to that then we don’t have to be interwebz friends.
SHOOOT you know….working like crazy, making a ton more art, trying to start a garden, riding my bike like it owes me money. haha just being in Hawaii. it’s crazy out here this trip, I have so much more freedom with my bike. lovin it! I miss you too, I still need your address so I can mail you penis pictures and funny post cards!!!
So I’ve been a busy bumble bee the past week. I decided that I wanted to make a few (as in 21) Valentines Day cards for my friends and family. I didn’t realize that by deciding to make them all myself that I would be taking on a serious project on top of all my other work but I managed to get everything finished and they all looked really nice. I’ll post pictures of a few of my favorites. It’s nice getting things in the mail on such a lame holiday, hopefully everyone enjoys them. Also in art related news, this week I picked Kevin Bacon, a banana, and a cross. That means I have to make a drawing incorporating all three of those subjects. I don’t know what I’m going to do but I plan on using the Kevin Bacon idea for something good. Stay tuned!!!
In other news, biking in Hawaii is getting better. WAY BETTER. I’m starting to figure out back routes to places, I love riding around at night because there’s about 70% less traffic and people out that can cause me further harm, and nothing feels better than sweat on my back with cool wind in my hair. I don’t care where I am as long as I have a bicycle. The first trip I took to Oahu was for around 2 1/2 months and it was a very lonely trip. Of course I went out and did stuff last time, I hiked all over the island, went and checked out 4 different waterfalls, partied, worked a lot, but the part that killed me was not having a bike. Everything I did last time was because someone was kind enough to drive me or let me borrow their car for a few hours. Getting groceries became a fucking production. NOT NO MO’!! I brought my sweet little whip from the mainland with me and everything is better. Now I just go. I pedal for as hard as I can for as long as I can and I try to get purposely lost so I can ride my way out and see where I go. Also, The Kickstand bike shop gives me the tingles. Haha yeeesssss. Oh, and this killer dude Ken who rides one of the fanciest Japanese fixed gear bikes I’ve had the pleasure of riding/bestowing my eyes upon, is totally down to ride with me when we both get off of work around the same time. He also smokes more weed than me which is kind of amazing, but beneficial. I can get high and ride my bike well, I just can’t get high and put my bike back together haha. I also bought a couple pair of cycling shorts in super neon colors and THEY ARE SOOO COMFY AND AMAZING. No more chub rub (where your inner thighs rub together)!!!
Finally: to the two ladies who responded to my saddle inquiry: thanks so much. I checked out the Velo Tempo.S2 and the Fizik Vesta and I got paid today, so we’ll see which one I decide upon! But I checked with two LBS and they don’t have any type of demo saddle program, they actually laughed at the idea. Either way, I’m stoked, I love buying nice things for my ass and bike. Yay! Ooh and new Seagull bag will arrive in about 3-4 weeks. I’m dying with joy. I figure if I’m going to be lonely on this island, I might as well do some nice things for myself haha and it’s all things I need so fuck it.
“Epic for me is about food and how riding makes me feel. If I know I can eat anything I want and still be ahead of the game, whether it’s weight or calories or good tan lines. Tan lines become important when summer roles [sic] around, you come back and take a shower and you can see the difference in the mirror when you’re naked. These things are important. If I go out and come back feeling like I didn’t earn a donut or a pastry, then what’s the point of riding? So epic comes when you drain yourself so completely, somewhere along the line, that you can start eating whatever you can find. Most people wouldn’t understand that, but cycling is a vain sport.”—Richard Sachs, as interviewed by the Rapha Continental (via pwas)
All my bike riding ladies: RECOMMEND SOME SADDLES THAT WON’T MAKE MY CROTCH FEEL LIKE IT’S BEEN BEATEN UP. I don’t have any qualms about the price or brand, I just want to hear what you, as bicycle riding ladies, have to say about what works for you. My only preference is that whichever one I end up buying is white. I’m just tired of feeling as if I’ve been kicked in my lady bits after riding around for a few hours. I bought some cycling shorts and that helps, but I know there has to be a better resolution than just sucking it up or I at least want to find a more comfortable saddle that will cause less pain. Either way I’d like some opinions expressed so give me a shout! Thank you ladies :)

Today was my first day riding around Hawaii and besides some cars not being sure about me being on the road with them, it was a super awesome day filled with all kinds of nicethings! I managed to keep up wth traffic, found decent hills to climb, found some new neighborhoods to creep at night, FOUND A KILLER BIKE SHOP THAT I CAN’T WAIT TO HANG OUT AT AGAIN (the Kick Stand), found the library and got a free membership ($1 movie rentals and old, musty books here I come), rode past the zoo, got lost, and then the best thing of all happened: I found a vegan restaurant called the Loving Hut where I met the nicest hippies ever. They served me an epic fried veggie burger with fries for around $7, they practically gave me hallf the menu in sample dishes to see if I liked them, they feed homeless people on the Alomoana Beach every Tuesday, and they have a huge menu. I’m so excited. Now I have three awesome places to hang out at when I have some down time and all the places are about a 15 to 20 min ride away so it’ll be nice to get out. Ohhhh and there’s a Whole Foods and some other natural foods store less than 8mi away, yay! Having my bike here is making my life better and better every day.
I just wanted to share my awesome day. I’m at work and going to finish my sacred wolf/gypsy/beer mug drawing so I can share it with you. I also got my first sunburn of 2011 riding around today and a man told me my freckles were beautiful and he wishes he could buy them by the pound. Too bad he was old and ridiculous.
